1990-1997 NA Miata 1.6L and 1.8L Engine and Long-Block Donor Identification
US/LHD 1990-1997 Mazda MX-5 Miata NA factory naturally aspirated engine and long-block applications only: 1990-1993 1.6-liter B6 and 1994-1997 1.8-liter BP branches. Resolve recipient and donor VIN/build, exact model year, displacement, installed service/engine identity, early-versus-later 1.6 crank configuration, manual/automatic preparation, Federal/California emissions equipment, sensors, accessories and seller contents. Exclude the US 1998 model-year gap, 1999-up NB/NC/ND, Mazdaspeed/turbo, non-US/RHD/JDM plug-in assumptions, performance builds and unsupported 1.6-to-1.8 or cross-generation swaps.
WHERE TO BUY
Open an exact listing, then confirm fitment, stock, price, and shipping with the seller before ordering.
Seller links checked . Prices and availability can change.
Confirm a US/LHD NA recipient and donor by 17-character VIN, model year/build, displacement and physical engine marks before purchase. Keep 1990-1993 1.6-liter B6 and 1994-1997 1.8-liter BP assemblies separate; a seller's NA, BP, B6, complete or fits 1990-1997 title does not prove direct interchange. The checked Mazda bulletin separates 1.6 service partial engines by manual B61P-02-300 and automatic B64J-02-300, while the 1994 1.8 branch uses BPE8-02-300 and a checked later parts index uses BPF1-02-300. Do not infer a BPE8-to-BPF1 supersession or full 1994-1997 equivalence without donor VIN, installed marks and matching intake, ignition, sensor and emissions equipment. For a 1.6 donor, use engine number plus physical crank-nose, pulley, bolt, sprocket and keyway inspection: the checked collision manual splits pulley identity at engine number 209446, while marketplace VIN phrasing around the familiar early boundary is inconsistent. A donor advertised as long nose can still have a damaged keyway; stop and inspect any pulley wobble rather than treating a used engine as a repair kit. Match manual versus automatic flywheel/flexplate, pilot/clutch, starter and external preparation, and itemize intake/exhaust manifolds, throttle body, injectors/rail, airflow meter, distributor/CAS and coils, harness, ECU, alternator, starter, A/C, power-steering equipment, engine-mount brackets, coolant pipes, sensors, oil pan and certified EGR/evaporative/catalyst/oxygen-sensor equipment. Preserve the recipient's legal emissions configuration and calibration; California and Federal identity must be proven, not assumed from displacement. Before buying used, require donor VIN/year/mileage basis, cold and warm compression or leak-down results for all cylinders with method, hot oil pressure if available, startup/run video, blow-by, smoke, oil consumption, internal noise, overheating and timing-service history, coolant/oil contamination, crank end play and pulley runout, keyway condition, drain and mount threads, storage/corrosion, exact contents, core/warranty/startup deadlines and freight-damage procedure. Have the installer or machine shop approve the engine and planned seals, timing-belt/water-pump and cooling-system work before purchase. Drain fluids and use rated lifting/support equipment.
OEM numbers
CHECKED MAZDA PARTIAL/LONG-ENGINE IDENTITIES: 1990-1993 1.6-liter manual-transmission B61P-02-300 and automatic-transmission B64J-02-3001994 1.8-liter BPE8-02-300later checked 1.8-liter parts-index identity BPF1-02-300, with short-engine identities BPF1-02-200A and BPF1-02-200B listed separately. CHECKED CRANK-PULLEY VERIFICATION ANCHORS: 1990-1993 through engine number 209446 B6S7-11-401Afrom engine number 209446 B6S8-11-4011994-1997 1.8-liter BPD3-11-401A. These nine service identities establish displacement, production, transmission or assembly-content branchesthey are not one interchange chain, a casting-code decoder, a promise that seller-described complete includes accessories, or a substitute for physical donor identification. MIA-0002 retains ownership of woodruff-key identity and crank-keyway repair intent.Supersession
No supersession is asserted between 1.6-liter B61P-02-300/B64J-02-300 and any 1.8-liter identity, between 1994 BPE8-02-300 and later BPF1-02-300, or between partial engine, short engine and seller-described long block. B61P-02-300 and B64J-02-300 are parallel manual/automatic 1990-1993 service branches in the checked Mazda bulletin. The checked collision manual presents B6S7-11-401A through engine number 209446 and B6S8-11-401 from engine number 209446 as a production split, not a donor-engine interchange guarantee. BPD3-11-401A is the separate 1.8-liter pulley identity. Existing key-part relationships remain on MIA-0002 and are not duplicated here.

Aftermarket options
A documented straight factory used long block or professionally remanufactured exact-application assembly is the primary replacement path where new Mazda supply is unavailable. A remanufactured or rebuilt engine requires a written build sheet, measured clearances, machining and parts list, crank/keyway findings, cylinder-head work, compression target, startup requirements, warranty and core terms. Performance-built, turbo, JDM, non-Miata B-series and 1.6-to-1.8 swap paths require separate mechanical, wiring, fuel, cooling, transmission, emissions and legal engineering and are outside this factory-donor guide. A seller's low-mileage or tested statement is not a substitute for reproducible test results and donor provenance.
Before you buy
US/LHD 1990-1997 NA only. Separate 1990-1993 1.6 from 1994-1997 1.8 and verify recipient/donor VIN, year, installed engine/service identity, crank configuration, transmission preparation and certified emissions equipment. Complete, partial, short- and long-block labels do not define contents. Require reproducible compression/leak-down and condition evidence, crank-nose/keyway inspection, exact accessories, warranty/core/freight terms and qualified installer approval; seller titles do not authorize JDM, cross-year, 1.6/1.8 or NB interchange.
