1999-2005 NB Miata Naturally Aspirated Engine and Long-Block Assembly Identification

US/LHD 1999-2005 Mazda MX-5 Miata NB naturally aspirated 1.8L engine and long-block assemblies only, split into 1999-2000 non-VVT and 2001-2005 intake-cam-VVT branches. Federal/California emissions identity, manual/automatic external interfaces, exact donor year/VIN and assembly contents remain separate checks. 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed turbo, NA, NC/ND, non-US/RHD/JDM engines, performance swaps and unsupported cross-year or transmission interchange are excluded.

What you need to know

Confirm a US/LHD 1999-2005 naturally aspirated NB with 17-character VIN, exact model year/build date, emission label and installed engine/head/VVT identity. Separate 1999-2000 BP4W non-VVT from 2001-2005 intake-cam-VVT applications; do not infer direct interchange from 1.8L displacement or a seller's broad year range. Exclude every 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed turbo engine and turbo-specific cooling, intake, exhaust, management and lubrication hardware. Match Federal/California emissions configuration and retain the vehicle's certified EGR, EVAP, PCV, catalyst, oxygen-sensor, intake/exhaust, harness and PCM/calibration system; a bare or used long block normally omits much of it. Manual and automatic cars use different external flywheel versus drive-plate/flexplate and related clutch/pilot/starter interfaces, and seller contents vary; prove exact required transfers rather than promising complete-assembly interchange. For a 1999 donor, Mazda TSB 002/99 narrows a thrust-bearing rattle diagnosis to VINs below JM1NB353*X0 126468, so document donor VIN, noise history and measured crank end play without labeling every 1999 engine defective. Before buying used, require donor VIN/year/mileage, cold and warm compression or leak-down method/results, hot oil pressure if available, crank end play, blow-by, coolant/oil contamination, overheating history, crank-nose/pulley runout, timing/VVT condition, oil-pan and drain-thread condition, cracks, corrosion/storage, an exact contents list and warranty/return/freight terms. Have the installer or machine shop approve the assembly and planned seals, timing-belt/water-pump service before purchase. Drain fluids and use rated lifting/stand points; an engine stand is not a substitute for safe hoisting procedure.

OEM numbers

For the checked early US naturally aspirated branch, Mazda TSB 002/99 identifies 1999 Federal partial engine BP4W-02-300 and California partial engine BP4Y-02-300 for its narrowed early-VIN thrust-bearing repair population. A checked dealer catalog reports BP4W-02-300 replaced by BP4W-02-300A and labels BP4W-02-300A a Federal complete engine assemblytreat that as a current service/seller identity, not proof that emissions hardware or every external component is included. The checked 2002 dealer catalog lists naturally aspirated service engine assembly BP6F-02-300B. BP4W is useful 1999-2000 non-VVT search language2001-2005 intake-cam-VVT engines are commonly listed under BP6D or BP-Z3 language, while service-assembly prefixes can differ. Names, castings and seller interchange labels do not prove complete 1999-2005 assembly interchange. Verify VIN, emission label, build, head/VVT hardware, installed service/casting marks and donor details.

Supersession

The checked dealer catalog reports BP4W-02-300 -> BP4W-02-300A for the Federal service assembly. BP4Y-02-300 is retained as the separate California identity stated in Mazda TSB 002/99, not folded into the Federal chain. No supersession is asserted between BP4W-02-300A and BP6F-02-300B, or between 1999-2000 non-VVT and 2001-2005 VVT engines. BP4W, BP6D and BP-Z3 search labels are not a chain. Manual/automatic flywheel or drive plate, pilot/clutch, starter interface, harness, PCM/calibration, cooling and emissions peripherals remain separate unless itemized.

Aftermarket options

A reputable machine-shop rebuild or documented remanufactured long block can be preferable to an unknown donor, but require the exact early non-VVT or later VVT branch, block/head and crank measurements, machining report, bearing and piston sizes, oil-pump and timing/VVT work, gasket/seal brands, warranty, core terms and installer acceptance. Recycler shorthand and broad interchange numbers are sourcing leads only. A used assembly should include reproducible test results and donor provenance, not just claims that it ran. Intake/exhaust manifolds, throttle body, injectors/rail, alternator, starter, power-steering or A/C accessories, engine harness, sensors, ECU, clutch/flywheel or flexplate, mounts, cooling parts and emissions equipment are separate unless the listing explicitly photographs and itemizes them. No turbo conversion, emissions defeat or unsupported JDM/NA/NB cross-generation swap is recommended.

Before you buy

US naturally aspirated NB only. Separate 1999-2000 non-VVT from 2001-2005 VVT, preserve Federal/California emissions identity and exclude Mazdaspeed turbo. A seller's 1.8L, BP or complete-engine label does not prove cross-year, manual/automatic, emissions or included-component interchange. Require VIN/donor provenance, installed marks, compression/leak-down, crank end play, oil/overheat history, exact contents and warranty/freight terms. Keep the original certified emissions configuration and have the installer or machine shop approve the engine and planned service before purchase.
