Non-M E46 Rear Shocks, Springs, Mounts and Reinforcement Package Identification

US/LHD non-M BMW E46 rear suspension only: model-year 1999-2005 Sedan, 2000-2006 Coupe and Convertible, and 2000-2005 Sport Wagon, with RWD versus xi, body, production date and factory suspension option resolved by VIN. This guide covers rear shocks, coil springs, upper mounts/reinforcement, bump stops, tubes and spring pads as separate package decisions. Exclude M3, E36, Compact, Z3/Z4, coilovers, RHD/non-US catalog assumptions and any universal spring/damper claim unsupported by the exact vehicle's BMW spring table and option data.

What you need to know

Decode the recipient VIN/build date, exact body, RWD/xi and factory suspension options such as S226 sport, S338 M Sport II or the applicable ZHP equipment before buying. Preserve photos of installed spring paint marks as supporting evidence, but do not decode them through an unsupported universal internet chart; the checked catalog mirror explicitly calls for the spring table. Compare each side's spring, ride height, shock number and pad thickness. Replace shocks and coil springs in axle pairs, while itemizing mounts, body-appropriate reinforcement, gaskets, plates/washers, bump stops, protection tubes, spring pads, self-locking nuts and lower hardware. Non-Convertible and Convertible upper mounts/reinforcement are not one package, and an xi upper pad example must not be generalized to RWD. A reinforcement plate spreads load but does not repair cracked or torn sheet metal: inspect both rear towers and stop for qualified structural repair if damage, deformation, loose studs or corrosion is found. BMW SIB 33 07 08 directs cleaning dirt/gravel from the upper and lower spring seats/pads because trapped debris can damage spring coating and promote corrosion/breakage. Diagnose tire/wheel, alignment, rear trailing-arm and control-arm bushings, subframe/body damage, spring breakage, mount play and shock leakage before attributing every clunk or ride-height change to one component. Rear spring and shock work involves stored spring energy and a supported trailing arm/control arm. Follow the exact BMW procedure with safe lifting/support, support the arm before releasing the shock, keep clear of the spring path, replace specified self-locking nuts and perform final bushing-sensitive torque at normal ride position where directed. Do not copy a generic torque value across bodies or aftermarket mount designs.

OEM numbers

Checked parts-catalog examples show why the package must branch rather than use one universal number. A representative RWD 330i Sedan catalog lists standard rear shock 33526757045 from 04/2001, S226 sport shock 33522282461 from 09/2001 and an S338 M Sport II/date branch including 33522282099earlier examples include 33521095913 standard and 33521096366 sport. A representative 330xi Sedan catalog instead lists rear shock 33526752506. Checked mount identities are 33521092362 on non-Convertible examples and 33526779670 on Convertible applications. Related checked service pieces include protection tube 33521136283, bump-stop/repair-kit branches 33502290318, 33502290347 and 33502290348, plate 33526762325, gasket 33526772864, upper plate 33526788999, lower spring pad 33531094518, 5 mm upper pad 33531136385 and a checked xi 14.5 mm upper pad 33531094754. Reinforcement plate 51718413359 is a checked non-Convertible applicationdo not extend it to the Convertible. The checked catalog mirrors direct spring selection to a vehicle/equipment spring table rather than one generic rear spring number.

Supersession

No universal BMW shock, spring, mount or pad supersession is asserted. The listed OE identities are representative production/body/option branches that must be re-resolved by VIN. 33521092362 and 33526779670 remain non-Convertible versus Convertible mount branches, and 51718413359 remains a checked non-Convertible reinforcement rather than a Convertible fit claim. Seller cross-reference language for Lesjofors 4208432 to 33531095692 / 33536750760 and Bilstein B3 38-233715 to 33531095709 is aftermarket application/cross-reference evidence only, not a BMW supersession chain. Likewise, Bilstein B4 19-103150 is an aftermarket damper identity, not proof of all-body or all-option E46 fitment.

Fitment

Decode the recipient VIN/build date, exact body, RWD/xi and factory suspension options such as S226 sport, S338 M Sport II or the applicable ZHP equipment before buying. Preserve photos of installed spring paint marks as supporting evidence, but do not decode them through an unsupported universal internet chart; the checked catalog mirror explicitly calls for the spring table. Aftermarket options

Bilstein's catalog and seller paths show body, standard/sport and RWD/xi application branches; use the current manufacturer vehicle lookup rather than brand-family shorthand. FCP Euro displayed Bilstein B4 19-103150 as an OE-style rear damper path, while BimmerWorld displayed Lesjofors 4208432 for a narrowly described non-sport replacement and Bilstein B3 38-233715 for a narrowly described RWD non-M sport Coupe/Sedan spring. The latter explicitly excludes Convertible, Wagon and ZHP; retain those limits. Seller application text can conflict, so the exact vehicle spring table and current manufacturer catalog control. Performance/monoball or polyurethane Convertible mount kits change noise, compliance and service characteristics and are not equivalent to a factory-style rubber mount. Confirm per-piece versus pair quantity, body, axle, drive, option, pad thickness, mount/reinforcement design, included hardware and warranty before ordering.

Before you buy

US/LHD non-M E46 only. Decode VIN/build date, body, RWD/xi and suspension options; A checked catalog mirror directs spring selection to a vehicle/equipment spring table. Do not universalize representative shock, mount, pad or spring numbers. Convertible mounts/reinforcement differ from checked non-Convertible hardware. Inspect towers; reinforcement does not repair torn sheet metal. Clean spring seats/pads, replace springs and shocks in axle pairs, account for stored spring energy and supported-arm procedure, and use specified new hardware and normal-position torque where the exact service procedure directs.
