2005-2014 Ford Mustang S197 Factory Saddle Fuel-Tank Shell Identification

US/LHD 2005-2014 Ford Mustang S197 factory saddle fuel-tank shells only. Resolve recipient and donor VIN/build, Coupe/Convertible, production, 4.0/3.7/4.6/5.0/5.4/5.8 engine and Base/V6/GT/Boss/Shelby equipment, emissions certification, early capped versus later capless filler architecture, exact installed/service identity, pump/sender apertures, internal transfer, EVAP/vent interfaces and written contents. GT500 manual-only vehicle scope does not make its tank universal. Exclude S550/S650, non-US/RHD, racing cells, return-style/performance conversions, modified shells and unqualified repair, cleaning, purging or hazardous shipping claims.

What you need to know

Begin with both VINs/build dates, body, engine/trim and emissions labels. For an early 2005 vehicle, verify the before-2005-04-26 TSB boundary rather than applying the slow-fill remedy broadly. Match exact shell identity, saddle shape, left/right pump and sender apertures, internal transfer architecture, capped/capless filler interface, vent/EVAP connections, mount points, straps, shields, cushions and every seal/retainer. Require actual-piece photographs and a written contents list. Reject cracks, distortion, swollen material, damaged flange/lock-ring lands, broken nipples, fuel/water contamination, heat/fire/impact exposure, corrosion on hardware, drilling, patching, coatings or unknown repair. Confirm lawful defueling, vapor-safe storage and carrier acceptance. Preserve S197-0007/S197-0054 pump/control, S197-0024 sender/transfer and S197-0025 EVAP/filler ownership; use qualified fuel-system service and provide no repair, purging or hazardous-shipping instruction.

OEM numbers

EARLY 2005 SERVICE/TSB TANK: 5R3Z-9002-AA for affected vehicles built before 2005-04-26. 2005-2010 SERVICE PATH: 7R3Z-9002-B and 8R3Z-9002-A -> 9R3Z-9002-A. 2011-2014 5.4-LITER BRANCH: BR3Z-9002-A. 2011-2014 3.7/5.0/5.8-LITER SERVICE PATH: BR3Z-9002-B and BR3Z-9002-C -> BR3Z-9002-D. Earlier engineering or seller aliases are search leads only. Tank identity does not establish included pumps, senders, transfer equipment, filler/EVAP parts, straps, shields, cushions, seals or retainers.

Supersession

Ford TSB 05-15-12, which supersedes 05-4-8, directs 5R3Z-9002-AA for the affected early-2005 slow-fill condition. Checked catalog relationships are 7R3Z-9002-B / 8R3Z-9002-A -> 9R3Z-9002-A and BR3Z-9002-B / BR3Z-9002-C -> BR3Z-9002-D. BR3Z-9002-A remains a separate checked 5.4-liter branch. No early/late, engine, body, capped/capless or component interchange is inferred beyond these service links.

Fitment

Begin with both VINs/build dates, body, engine/trim and emissions labels. For an early 2005 vehicle, verify the before-2005-04-26 TSB boundary rather than applying the slow-fill remedy broadly. Match exact shell identity, saddle shape, left/right pump and sender apertures, internal transfer architecture, capped/capless filler interface, vent/EVAP connections, mount points, straps, shields, cushions and every seal/retainer. Require actual-piece photographs and a written contents list. Reject cracks, distortion, swollen material, damaged flange/lock-ring lands, broken nipples, fuel/water contamination, heat/fire/impact exposure, corrosion on hardware, drilling, patching, coatings or unknown repair. Confirm lawful defueling, vapor-safe storage and carrier acceptance. Preserve S197-0007/S197-0054 pump/control, S197-0024 sender/transfer and S197-0025 EVAP/filler ownership; use qualified fuel-system service and provide no repair, purging or hazardous-shipping instruction.

Aftermarket options

JEGS 555-78265 is a checked aftermarket 2005-2010 tank path, not a Ford supersession and not evidence for 2011-2014 fitment. Any direct replacement must prove exact application, emissions/filler interfaces, material, crash protection, pump/sender openings and included hardware. Racing cells, return-style/performance conversions and modified filler or EVAP systems change safety, emissions and calibration assumptions and are outside this guide. No patching or tank repair is recommended.

Before you buy

US/LHD 2005-2014 S197 factory saddle tanks only. Match both VINs/builds, body, engine/trim/emissions equipment, capped/capless filler, exact identity, apertures, transfer and EVAP interfaces. Apply 5R3Z-9002-AA only to the documented early-2005 TSB boundary. Keep 5.4 BR3Z-9002-A separate from the BR3Z-9002-D path. Itemize all contents, reject damage/contamination/repairs and confirm lawful defueling and carrier acceptance.
