2011-2014 Mustang GT and 2012-2013 Boss 302 5.0L Engine and Long-Block Donor Identification

US/LHD 2011-2014 Ford Mustang GT and 2012-2013 Mustang Boss 302 factory 5.0-liter engine/service-engine or defined long-block replacement paths only. Resolve recipient VIN/build, GT versus Boss 302, model year, exact engine tag/service identity, GT automatic 6R80 versus manual MT82 preparation, Boss production MT82 manual-only configuration, oil-pan/oil-cooler configuration, front cover, VCT connectors, intake/exhaust, sensors, harness, PCM/calibration, flywheel/flexplate, accessories and every included component. Exclude 2005-2010 4.6L, 3.7L V6, Shelby GT500, 2015-up S550, F-150/truck or SUV 5.0L assumptions, Boss 302S race packages presented as production-road-car equivalents, non-US/RHD applications, modified crate/performance builds and unsupported swaps.

What you need to know

Start with recipient and donor 17-character VINs, build dates, GT or Boss 302 identity, transmission and photographs of the engine tag, block/head castings, front cover, oil pan, oil-filter adapter/cooler, VCT connectors, intake and exhaust sides and every connector. Ford identifies Gen 1 as the 2011-2014 Mustang GT era, while its Boss documentation shows distinct rods, pistons, CNC heads, valve train, intake, oil-control/cooling and calibration-related equipment; do not treat a GT long block, Boss service engine or truck Coyote as equivalent from displacement alone. Ford's 2012 and 2013 Boss owner supplements each identify the production Boss drivetrain as the MT82 six-speed manual; 2012-2013 production Boss 302 was manual-only, so generic seller or service-catalog metadata listing 6R80, T56 and MT82 together does not prove an automatic Boss engine package. Confirm whether the physical sale is a bare short block, assembled long block, service engine, complete takeout or engine-plus-transmission package. Itemize cylinder heads/cams/phasers, covers, pan/pickup, oil pump and adapter/cooler, water pump, harmonic damper, intake/throttle body, injectors/rails, exhaust manifolds, coils/plugs, sensors/solenoids, engine harness, PCM/control modules, alternator, starter, A/C compressor, mounts, flywheel/flexplate, clutch/torque converter, fasteners, fluids and gaskets. This Mustang scope uses electric power-assisted steering and no factory engine-driven hydraulic power-steering pump; a hydraulic pump supplied with a claimed donor is evidence of a non-stock or other-application package that must be resolved, not a required Mustang accessory. Automatic/manual preparation and a flexplate delivered on a service engine are package facts, not proof of plug-and-play fit. For used or remanufactured units require donor mileage and VIN, engine tag, start/run video when lawful, qualified compression and leak-down results with method, oil-pressure evidence, borescope or internal inspection where warranted, oil/coolant contamination checks, timing noise, overheating or low-oil history, modifications/tune history, broken castings/connectors/mounts, corrosion, storage, core identity, warranty labor limits and return terms. Engines and blocks must be drained and shipped under carrier rules; the shipper remains responsible for hazardous-fluid classification, packaging, marking and documents. Use current VIN-specific Ford service and emissions procedures and qualified installation/calibration; this buyer guide provides no engine-swap or emissions-defeat instructions.

OEM numbers

CHECKED SERVICE-ENGINE IDENTITIES, NOT ONE GT/BOSS OR COMPLETE/LONG-BLOCK INTERCHANGE LIST. Standard GT catalog branches include BR3Z-6006-H and BR3Z-6006-J followed by remanufactured service engine BR3Z-6006-BRMthe current BRM page also lists ER3Z-6006-A as replaced. Match BR3Z-6006-BRM by exact VIN/build and engine tags, including checked BG-397-AA, BG-397-AB, BG-398-AA, BG-398-BB and use-with DG-397-AA or DG-398-AA notes. A separate checked premium/performance-equipment GT service family has 6006 service-engine predecessors BR3Z-6006-G and ER3Z-6006-B followed by DR3Z-6006-DARM, with checked tag examples DG-397-BA and EG-405-AAdo not decode the catalog brake wording into interchange without VIN and installed tag. Ford also lists 6009 short-block identity BR3Z-6009-E as replaced by DR3Z-6006-DARM. That is a distinct short-block-to-service-engine service solution crossing base numbers, not ordinary 6006 assembly interchange, and it does not mean the short block contains the service engine's heads, covers, pump or other contents. Boss 302 service branches are CR3Z-6006-A and CR3Z-6006-C followed by CR3Z-6006-D. CR3Z-6006-B is a separate checked 02/2011-production Boss entry without a proven successor in this evidence. The checked 6006 service assemblies are described as including oil pan, valve covers, front cover and water pump while gaskets/additional parts remain separatethe direct CR3Z and DR3Z pages also use ambiguous alternate Short Block naming, so a seller must itemize the physical package rather than relying on the title.

Supersession

Supported checked 6006 service-engine links are BR3Z-6006-H -> BR3Z-6006-BRM, BR3Z-6006-J -> BR3Z-6006-BRM, ER3Z-6006-A -> BR3Z-6006-BRM, BR3Z-6006-G -> DR3Z-6006-DARM, ER3Z-6006-B -> DR3Z-6006-DARM, CR3Z-6006-A -> CR3Z-6006-D and CR3Z-6006-C -> CR3Z-6006-D. Ford additionally lists BR3Z-6009-E -> DR3Z-6006-DARM as a short-block-to-service-engine service solution; because 6009 and 6006 identify different assembly levels, this is not represented as ordinary service-engine interchange or proof of equal contents. No CR3Z-6006-B successor is asserted. The BR3Z/DR3Z GT families and CR3Z Boss family are parallel application branches, not cross-trim supersessions. A current catalog page's 2012-2014 service fitment for CR3Z-6006-D does not create a 2014 production Boss or prove GT interchange. Ford's combined generic 6R80/T56/MT82 service-page metadata also does not create an automatic-production Boss: the production 2012-2013 Boss 302 is retained as MT82 manual-only. Engine tags, VCT connector requirements, transmission preparation and package contents must still match.

Fitment

Start with recipient and donor 17-character VINs, build dates, GT or Boss 302 identity, transmission and photographs of the engine tag, block/head castings, front cover, oil pan, oil-filter adapter/cooler, VCT connectors, intake and exhaust sides and every connector. Use current VIN-specific Ford service and emissions procedures and qualified installation/calibration; this buyer guide provides no engine-swap or emissions-defeat instructions.

Aftermarket options

A Ford service engine or VIN/tag-matched remanufactured Gen-1 Mustang GT long block may be compared after its exact internals, VCT connectors, pan/cooler, covers, transmission preparation and included equipment are written down. A Boss 302 replacement must be explicitly supported as Boss-spec by the manufacturer and still requires exact package confirmation; a generic 2011-2014 Coyote listing is not enough. Ford Performance Gen-1, Boss 302S, Aluminator, sealed-race and other crate/performance engines are outside the donor/interchange claim unless the buyer independently establishes lawful road use, controls, emissions compliance and every required component through qualified professionals. Truck/SUV Coyotes, 2015-up generations, mixed-generation builds, deleted controls, altered oiling and universal swap packages are excluded.

Before you buy

Scope is US/LHD 2011-2014 Mustang GT and production 2012-2013 Boss 302 only; Boss production was MT82 manual-only, and generic 6R80/T56/MT82 metadata does not create an automatic Boss. Match VIN/build, GT/Boss, engine tag/service branch, transmission preparation, VCT connectors, pan/cooler, controls, accessories and exact package contents. Long block, service engine and complete takeout are not synonyms. Require documented internal condition, mileage, core/warranty and drained protected freight. Modified PATS-deleted/return-style-fuel controls are not stock donor evidence. Generic Coyote, truck, S550, crate/race and swap claims are excluded; no emissions defeat or swap procedure is provided.
