1990-2005 NA/NB Miata Factory Removable Hardtop Selection and Mounting
US/LHD 1990-1997 NA and 1999-2005 NB Mazda Miata/MX-5 roadsters using a factory Mazda detachable hardtop, including standard and Mazdaspeed body applications only after exact vehicle-side hardware and defroster checks. This guide covers complete-top identity, front and side latch generations, side strikers, rear-deck studs/locks, hardtop seals, defroster pigtails, condition, provenance and transport. The US 1998 gap year, NC/ND/RF, non-US/RHD assumptions, aftermarket shells, racing-only mounting systems and custom brackets are excluded.
WHERE TO BUY
Open an exact listing, then confirm fitment, stock, price, and shipping with the seller before ordering.
Seller links checked . Prices and availability can change.
First prove the item is a factory Mazda NA/NB detachable hardtop and document the donor/top details, underside, latches, glass, connectors and every included loose part. The checked Miata hardtop reference reports that factory NA and NB tops are physically usable across 1990-2005 cars, but electrical pigtails and latch/striker generations can differ, especially around the mid-2003 redesign. Physical fit is therefore not plug-and-play completion. A usable installation needs two front top latches matched to the windshield-header strikers, both side latches matched to the side strikers, both rear-deck locks/studs, intact locating guides and seals, and the correct defroster pigtail/harness if defrost is expected. Do not drive with only some attachments. Mazda's manuals instruct installation/removal on level ground with the parking brake set, windows lowered and ignition off; fully lower and latch the soft top before installing the hardtop, disconnect/reconnect the defroster coupler, and verify every top and side latch is locked. Use two people, protect the paint and glass, and store the top on cushioning in a dry stable position; do not lean it against a wall. The detachable top is not a steel rollover roof. Before buying, inspect for cracks or prior composite repair, distortion, damaged latch mounts, corrosion, glass/date and defroster-grid continuity, connector damage, missing headliner/trim, hardened or torn seals, water leaks and paint mismatch. Require seller provenance, identifying photos, itemized contents and pickup/freight damage terms; prefer local inspection for a fragile high-value used shell.
OEM numbers
Checked current seller catalog identities for a complete genuine replacement top are NCY1-R1-81XN-98NCY1-R1-81XB-98treat them as current replacement/search identities, not proof that every historic color-coded shell supersedes to one finish. Hardtop front latch generations listed by the checked hardtop reference are old-style RH NA01-R1-310M and LH NA01-R1-320M versus redesigned RH ND30-R1-310 and LH ND30-R1-320match the car's windshield-header striker generation. Hardtop side latch NA02-R1-310G is sold individually. Vehicle-side striker branches are old-style LH NA02-R1-361D and RH NA02-R1-371D versus redesigned LH NA01-R1-361J and RH NA01-R1-371J, with screws 9983-40-820B. Rear-deck hardtop studs are NA01-R1-38XB, two required. Defroster pigtails are NA N007-67-060A and NB NC11-67-060A. Hardtop-specific service items include RH roof-panel weatherstrip NC10-R1-881D, LH NC10-R1-891D, rear hardtop weatherstrip NA01-R1-89XB, deck-lock plate NA01-R1-863, RH deck-lock sheet NA01-R1-864, LH NC10-R1-874 and locating guide NA01-R1-311. These service numbers identify componentsthey do not prove that a used listing includes them.Supersession
No historic complete-shell supersession chain is asserted. NCY1-R1-81XN-98 / NCY1-R1-81XB-98 are retained as checked current replacement/seller identities only; original tops were color/equipment specific. Physical NA/NB factory-top compatibility does not merge latch generation, windshield-header striker, side striker, rear-deck fastener, defroster pigtail, headliner, glass, seal or paint branches. N007-67-060A and NC11-67-060A are separate NA/NB pigtail identities, not a plug-and-play interchange claim. Old-style and redesigned latch/striker numbers must remain matched systems.

Aftermarket options
No aftermarket shell is promoted as a verified substitute on this factory-top page. Mazda Motorsports lists positive-fastener bracket set 0000-04-5997-MC for 1990-2005 competition use and explains that racing rules replace factory latches with positive fasteners; that is racing hardware, not authority to omit street attachment points or mix latch generations. Reproduction studs/strikers may be sourcing options only after exact geometry, hardware and seller application are checked. Avoid improvised brackets, partially secured tops and cut defroster wiring. A used factory top is acceptable only with documented identity, complete matched mounting hardware or a known completion plan, sound shell/glass/seals and safe pickup/freight terms.
Before you buy
Factory Mazda NA/NB detachable tops are physically cross-generation usable, but that does not mean plug-and-play: match front latch and windshield-striker generation, both side latches/strikers, both rear studs/locks, seals and NA/NB defroster pigtail. Verify exact contents, shell/glass/seal condition, prior repair, provenance and freight terms. Install/remove with two people on level ground, secure every latch before driving and store cushioned/stable. The hardtop is not a steel rollover roof. Complete-top supply was scarce and mostly backordered, out of stock or freight/pickup constrained.
