US E46 Rear Axle Carriers: RWD Non-M and M3 Donor Identification

US/LHD BMW E46 only, narrowed to factory rear-wheel-drive non-M 3 Series applications explicitly supported by the checked 33316770865 catalog record and US 2001-2006 E46 M3 Coupe/Convertible applications supported by 33312282490. Resolve recipient and donor VIN/build, body, transmission and exact service identity. Exclude E36, E30, Z3/Z4, xi/AWD because additional transmission-sensitive carrier branches were not fully mapped, non-US/RHD assumptions, fabricated swap or drift cradles, and cut, welded or structurally repaired carriers.

What you need to know

Begin with both VINs/build dates, US body and drivetrain, readable factory identity and actual-piece photographs. This guide publishes two separate carrier families: the checked RWD non-M branch and the US E46 M3 branch. Do not use E46 naming, shared body attachment locations or shared loose hardware to infer interchange. Verify differential case and mount, trailing/control-arm pickup points, sway-bar brackets, braces or V-strut interfaces, bushing positions, ABS and parking-brake routing, heat shields and every threaded hole. A bare carrier does not include differential, rear cover, axles, trailing arms, control arms, hubs/bearings, brakes, springs, shocks, sway bar/links, braces, bushings, sensors, wiring, cables, shields or fasteners unless each item is listed. Require straight datum and pickup points; reject cracks, buckling, bent ears, elongated or torn holes, severe pitting or perforation, collision marks, heat, filler, grinding, non-factory welds, straightening or coating that hides condition. The removable carrier and the welded body rear-axle-carrier support are different structures. BMW service material documents cracks in the body structure around carrier mounting points; replacing the removable carrier does not repair a cracked, torn or displaced floor/support. Have the recipient body and donor carrier inspected and measured by a qualified structural or alignment professional when damage is suspected. Use appropriate lifting equipment, current BMW procedures and hardware rules, and complete a professional four-wheel alignment after installation.

RWD NON-M SERVICE FAMILY: rear axle carrier 33311094410 -> 33316757435 -> 33316770865. US E46 M3: distinct rear axle carrier 33312229290 -> 33312282490. These are complete-carrier identities, not rear axle carrier panel, floor-support, reinforcement-plate, bushing, differential, arm, hub or loaded-dropout numbers. No non-M-to-M3 interchange is claimed. xi/AWD carrier identities are deliberately outside this published scope.

Supersession

Verified non-M chain: 33311094410 -> 33316757435 -> 33316770865; RealOEM identifies 33316757435 as retrospectively exchangeable and the dealer record lists both earlier numbers as replaced. Verified M3 chain: 33312229290 -> 33312282490; BMWFans reports retrospective exchangeability. No supersession or interchange is asserted between the non-M and M3 families, and no later number is appended without a recipient-VIN EPC check.

Aftermarket options

A correctly identified straight factory carrier is the accepted identity path. Weld-in body reinforcement plates, carrier reinforcements, repaired or powder-coated carriers, solid or polyurethane bushings and modified geometry or differential-mount conversions are separate structural or performance decisions with installation, noise/vibration/harshness and alignment consequences. None is represented as an OE-equivalent carrier identity, and reinforcement or coating must not conceal cracks, corrosion, heat, collision damage or prior repairs.

Before you buy

US/LHD E46 only, narrowed to proven RWD non-M and 2001-2006 M3 branches. Match both VINs/builds and exact carrier identity; non-M 33311094410 -> 33316757435 -> 33316770865 and M3 33312229290 -> 33312282490 are separate families. xi/AWD, E36, Z3/Z4, non-US/RHD and modified carriers are excluded. Require itemized contents and actual-piece photos. Reject cracks, deformation, torn mounts, serious corrosion, heat, welds, filler or straightening. Inspect the recipient body support separately because a removable carrier does not repair cracked or displaced floor mounts. Use qualified structural inspection, proper lifting, current BMW procedures and final alignment.
