For an M54 325i Sedan, the checked catalog split is ZF A5S325Z-TT before 03/2002, GM A5S390R-ZP from 03/2002 through 08/2002, and GM A5S390R-ZV from 09/2002. For an M54 325Ci Coupe/Convertible, it is ZF before 03/2003 and GM ZV from 03/2003. A separately identified M56/SULEV Sedan or Coupe retains the ZF TT branch; do not apply the ordinary M54 year cutoff to it. VIN/build, M54 versus M56, RWD, and the housing identification plate with two-character alpha code must control. The EGS is a separate module and is not assumed included. Scan DME/EGS/DSC and verify software, connector, internal harness and valve-body family before condemning the transmission. If EGS replacement, programming, coding or adaptation work is required, follow the current BMW procedure with stable power, then perform the specified adaptation deletion, fault clearing and test drive. Do not choose fluid by model year: use the transmission/pan label and current BMW/ZF/GM approved specification and fill procedure. OEM diagrams show the torque converter separately, so converter inclusion is listing-specific. Also verify cooler/lines, output flange, seals, mounts, shifter/cable and hardware. Address cooler contamination before installing a replacement. Use professional lifting/support equipment and never work under an unsupported vehicle.

Aftermarket options
Exact-tag OEM exchange, exact-family specialist-remanufactured and documented used/recycled assemblies are the checked sourcing paths. Require the rebuilder or recycler to confirm donor VIN/body/build, M54 versus M56, RWD, housing tag/alpha code, BMW/ZF/GM identifiers, connector and cooler/output configuration. Performance valve bodies, standalone controllers, swap harnesses, AWD conversions and internal rebuild kits are outside this assembly-identification guide. A supplied torque converter, valve body, internal harness, seals, fluid, cooler service and EGS must each be confirmed rather than inferred.
Before you buy
US/LHD factory-RWD E46 325i Sedan and 325Ci Coupe/Convertible only. Confirm VIN/build, M54 versus M56/SULEV, body and the installed TT, ZP or ZV housing tag; year and seller fitment alone are unsafe. M54 date branches and the M56 ZF exception must remain separate. Retain and verify the matching EGS; a used EGS is not assumed included. Diagnose DME/EGS/DSC faults before replacement and follow current BMW programming/adaptation procedures when applicable. Select fluid from the transmission label and current approved procedure. Transmission, torque converter, EGS, cooler/lines, output flange, guibo/driveshaft, shifter/cable, mounts, fluid, seals and hardware are not assumed bundled. Inspect used/reman condition, testing, warranty, core and freight terms. Correct cooler contamination and use professional lifting/support equipment.
