WHERE TO BUY

Open an exact listing, then confirm fitment, stock, price, and shipping with the seller before ordering.

What you need to know

Do not buy by S tag or ratio alone. Confirm chassis/body, case family, market, ratio, input flange, output flanges/axles, rear cover/mounts, driveshaft and ABS/gearing effects. Open the unit or test breakaway/condition where practical; a worn clutch LSD, welded carrier or moved tag can defeat a visual shortcut. Ring-and-pinion setup requires backlash, preload and contact-pattern measurement.

OEM numbers

E36 factory tag convention: an S before the ratio identifies a factory limited-slip tag (for example S3.15 or S3.23), but tags can be missing or moved and condition must be verified. E36 six-cylinder race references use the 188 mm medium casefour-cylinder/compact and Euro M3 large-case applications are separate. Non-M E46 commonly uses the later 188K familyE36/E30/E34 ZF cores require a purpose-built conversion and professional setup rather than a direct swap.

Supersession

Identification/upgrade page, not a supersession chain. E36 medium-case assemblies, E46 188K housings, donor ZF cores and complete aftermarket carriers are distinct paths.

Fitment

Do not buy by S tag or ratio alone. Confirm chassis/body, case family, market, ratio, input flange, output flanges/axles, rear cover/mounts, driveshaft and ABS/gearing effects. Open the unit or test breakaway/condition where practical; a worn clutch LSD, welded carrier or moved tag can defeat a visual shortcut. Ring-and-pinion setup requires backlash, preload and contact-pattern measurement.

Aftermarket options

Checked RacingDiffs E46 188K donor-core conversion kit and complete forged 188K carrier/assembled options. All checked variants were sold out. A donor ZF core should be inspected/refreshed; this page does not recommend welded street differentials or claim a universal E36-to-E46 bolt-in swap.

Before you buy

E36 identification and non-M E46 188K upgrade paths are separate sections, not direct interchanges. Read the case/tag and verify ratio, input/output flanges, mounting, axle compatibility and required setup before ordering. Documented scarcity exception: seller-path count is four, but availability is zero at the dated checks. Differential case family, ratio, input/output flange, ABS/speed-signal implications, and installed unit must be verified.
