What you need to know

Start with both VINs, build dates and body styles. Photograph the tank identity/stamp, full exterior and accessible interior, every opening and flange, filler neck interface, pump and sender openings, vent/EVAP fittings, seams, drain if present, bands/brackets and protectors. Require a written inventory of shell, pump/hanger, sender, seals/lock rings, filler tube/cap/hoses, vent/EVAP valves and hoses, bands, brackets, protector/shield, wiring and hardware. Reject rust scale, perforation, seam leakage, deep dents or distortion at sealing surfaces, broken or altered fittings, cut/welded/brazed/patch repairs, unknown internal coatings, collision loading, fire/flood exposure, contaminated or foul contents and any tank with undocumented residue/vapor state. A drained tank may remain regulated hazardous-material packaging; require qualified lawful cleaning/purging documentation and carrier acceptance. Provide no draining, vapor purging, pressure testing, welding, cutting or ignition-source procedure. Use qualified fuel-system inspection and current Nissan service procedures.

OEM numbers

CHECKED FACTORY TANK-SHELL FAMILIES, NOT A GENERIC S13/S14 INTERCHANGE. S13 Coupe/Fastback main chain: 17202-40F00, 17202-40F10, 17202-53F00, 17202-53F01 and 17202-53F55 to 17202-53F56SCH-0030 already owns 17202-53F56 as an adjacent rusted-tank/strap/filler anchor. S13 Convertible: 17202-59F00 and 17202-59F01 to 17202-59F56the checked catalog gives Convertible a separate 17221-59F01 filler branch. S14 Coupe: 17202-15U51 for 02/1994-07/1995, replaced by 17202-15U00 from 07/1995. Pump, hanger, sender, seals, lock rings, filler tube/cap/hoses, vent/EVAP valves and hoses, bands, brackets, protectors, shields, wiring and hardware remain separate unless the seller itemizes them.

Supersession

The checked Nissan catalog and direct service pages support 17202-40F00/40F10/53F00/53F01/53F55 -> 17202-53F56 for the S13 main-body family; 17202-59F00/59F01 -> 17202-59F56 for the S13 Convertible family; and 17202-15U51 -> 17202-15U00 for S14. These are three separate families, not one chain. Preserve the S14 filler-tube 17221-70F00 -> 17221-81F00 August 1996 interface change as a separate check, not a tank supersession. Current manufacturer VIN lookup controls any later replacement.

Fitment

Start with both VINs, build dates and body styles. Photograph the tank identity/stamp, full exterior and accessible interior, every opening and flange, filler neck interface, pump and sender openings, vent/EVAP fittings, seams, drain if present, bands/brackets and protectors. Require a written inventory of shell, pump/hanger, sender, seals/lock rings, filler tube/cap/hoses, vent/EVAP valves and hoses, bands, brackets, protector/shield, wiring and hardware. Reject rust scale, perforation, seam leakage, deep dents or distortion at sealing surfaces, broken or altered fittings, cut/welded/brazed/patch repairs, unknown internal coatings, collision loading, fire/flood exposure, contaminated or foul contents and any tank with undocumented residue/vapor state. A drained tank may remain regulated hazardous-material packaging; require qualified lawful cleaning/purging documentation and carrier acceptance. Provide no draining, vapor purging, pressure testing, welding, cutting or ignition-source procedure. Use qualified fuel-system inspection and current Nissan service procedures.

Aftermarket options

Prefer the exact current genuine service shell or a fully documented used factory shell selected by VIN/body/production and all interfaces. A motorsport fuel cell, universal tank, modified sender plate, welded sump, external-pump conversion or custom filler/vent system is a separate engineered fuel-system project and is outside this identification claim.

Before you buy

S13 Coupe/Fastback, S13 Convertible and S14 use separate factory tank families; a generic S13/S14 tank listing is not enough. Match both VINs/builds, body, shell identity, every opening/interface and written contents. Reject rusted, leaking, dented, altered, patched, coated, burned, flooded or contaminated tanks. A drained tank may still be regulated hazardous-material packaging; qualified lawful preparation and carrier acceptance are required. No unsafe draining, purging, pressure, cutting or welding guidance is provided.
