First-Generation FR-S/BRZ/86 Factory Brake Service: Standard vs Brembo

US-market 2013-2020 first-generation Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86. Standard and factory-installed Brembo systems are separate branches. Factory Brembo coverage is limited to documented BRZ Performance Package/special-edition and Toyota TRD package applications; verify VIN/build sheet and installed hardware. Non-US small-brake branches, conversions and 2022-and-later cars are excluded.

What you need to know

All US 2013-2016 FR-S and 2013-2016 BRZ use the standard system from the factory. US Toyota 86 uses standard brakes in 2017-2018; 2019 Base/GT are standard while the 6MT-only TRD Special Edition has Brembo; 2020 Base or GT has Brembo only with the M/T-only TRD Handling Package, while Hakone and every automatic are standard from the factory. BRZ factory Brembo applications include 2017-2020 Limited 6MT with Performance Package, 2017 Series.Yellow, 2018 and 2020 tS, and 2019 Series.Gray. A 2018 50th Anniversary name alone does not prove the separate Performance Package. Confirm VIN/build sheet, installed fixed versus sliding caliper, rotor dimensions, axle and installed number because prior swaps can override factory configuration. Replace friction parts by axle pair and verify whether rotors are sold individually and pad kits cover one axle.

Supersession

The listed Subaru and Toyota same-badge chains are supported by checked catalogs. Corresponding Toyota/Subaru applications are not represented as official cross-brand supersessions. Standard and Brembo rotors, pads, calipers, hoses and hardware are not interchangeable service branches. Toyota Brembo front-hose LH catalogs expose SU003-06807 and SU003-11401 without a sufficiently documented public supersession chain, so VIN confirmation controls.

Fitment

Aftermarket options

Checked Brembo manufacturer/catalog replacements include standard front rotor 09.A921.11, standard rear rotor 09.C662.11, factory-Brembo front Xtra rotor 09.7812.1X and rear rotor 09.A198.21. Checked pad identities include standard early front P 78 027/P78027N, later front P 78 021/P 78 021X, standard rear P 78 018/P78018N, Brembo front P 54 039/P54039N and Brembo rear P 56 048/P56048N. Market availability varies and exact installed system controls. No aftermarket hose SKU met the same evidence threshold. STI-caliper swaps, aftermarket big-brake kits and conversion advice remain under ZN6-0007 and are excluded here.

Before you buy

Brakes are safety-critical. Match VIN/build sheet and the installed fixed-versus-sliding caliper, rotor dimensions, axle, side and part number; package, trim, paint, transmission or wheel diameter alone can misidentify a modified or repaired car. Do not mix standard and Brembo components on an axle. Replace friction components in axle pairs, inspect minimum thickness/runout, seals, boots, pins, springs, shims, bleeders and hoses, and follow the factory procedure for fluid, bleeding, torque and bedding. Wheel clearance requires barrel/spoke/offset clearance, not diameter alone. Factory Brembo hardware is not a claim of track readiness. Seller stock, fitment and prices are dated observations.
