E46 Coupe Factory LED Tail Lamps: Outer vs Inner, Side and Production

US/LHD 2003-2006 E46 325Ci, 330Ci and M3 Coupe built from 03/2003 with the factory clear-indicator LED outer-lamp system. Verify VIN/build date and installed numbers. Earlier coupes, every convertible/sedan/wagon/Compact, RHD/non-US optic and cosmetic conversion are excluded.

What you need to know

Direct replacement only for factory-equipped US/LHD Coupe built from 03/2003. Outer side-panel and inner trunk-lid units are different pieces; order physical left/right and confirm clear-indicator lens, LED/bulb function, carrier, gasket, connector and included parts. Coupe outer lamps do not interchange with Convertible 63216937453/63216937454 or any sedan/wagon/Compact family. Earlier coupes are retrofit scope: BMW instructions require adapter wiring and coding, and cars before 09/2001 require light-switch-centre replacement.

Supersession

Outer clear LED: 63216937449 -> 63216920699 LH; 63216937450 -> 63216920700 RH. Inner trunk lid: 63218364727 -> 63216920705 LH; 63218364728 -> 63216920706 RH. Keep the 03/2003 production split explicit: pre-03/2003 incandescent outer lamps 63218383825/63218383826 are not asserted as plug-in supersessions because BMW's retrofit procedure requires adapter cables and coding.

Aftermarket options

ULO's manufacturer catalog maps 7437-04 to RH outer 63216920700 and 7441-01/7441-02 to LH/RH inner 63216920705/63216920706; it identifies outer versus inner and whether a lamp base is included. Aftermarket complete sets require Coupe-only, 03/2003+, physical side, clear-indicator, SAE/DOT, connector, carrier, gasket and included-component checks. No Convertible or sedan interchange is claimed.

Before you buy

Order by BMW number and physical side, not driver/passenger wording alone. The outer body-panel pieces are LED assemblies; the inner trunk-lid lamps, outer bulb holders, gaskets and adapter wiring are separate purchase checks. Earlier coupes need BMW's retrofit/coding path. NHTSA 11V-438 is limited to E46 sedans built 2001-09-01 through 2005-02-01; shared connector labels do not extend that recall to Coupe, and buying a lamp does not replace an open recall remedy.
