2005-2010 Mustang GT 8.8 Rear Axle Assembly, Housing and Used-Donor Identification
US/LHD 2005-2010 S197 Ford Mustang GT with the factory 4.6L 3V V8 and factory 8.8-inch solid rear axle. Standard GT Coupe or Convertible only after VIN, build, axle tag and installed configuration agree. Every 4.0L Base/V6 7.5-inch axle, GT500, GT500KR, Bullitt and other Shelby or special-edition branches, 2011-plus assemblies, non-US cars, swaps, fabricated or 9-inch housings, internal rebuild work, axle-shaft-only work and suspension-link work are excluded.
WHERE TO BUY
Open an exact listing, then confirm fitment, stock, price, and shipping with the seller before ordering.
Seller links checked . Prices and availability can change.
Confirm a standard factory 2005-2010 Mustang GT 4.6L and its factory Traction-Lok/limited-slip requirement, then read the donor VIN, metal axle tag and vehicle axle information before ordering. Engine, transmission or model year alone does not identify the installed 3.31, 3.55 or 3.73 ratio, standard or special-duty housing, limited-slip carrier, pinion flange or included equipment. An open reman axle is not a like-for-like standard-GT replacement; selecting one is a deliberate functional downgrade/change that must be understood before purchase. Match 8.8-inch size, exact ratio, differential type, ABS/tone-ring arrangement, shafts, brakes and backing plates, parking-brake hardware, companion flange, cover and vent, upper and lower control-arm brackets, spring and shock mounts, panhard bracket and overall condition. Require written photos of the axle tag, cover, flange, both tubes and every bracket. A ratio change can require correct electronic calibration. Never infer that a complete-looking donor includes usable brakes, ABS sensors, shafts, cables, hardware or fluid.
OEM numbers
Historical Ford Performance complete-assembly identifiers are M-4001-A355, an 8.8-inch 3.55-ratio 31-spline Traction-Lok assembly with axle shafts for 2005-2010 Mustang GT, and M-4001-A373, an 8.8-inch 3.73-ratio 31-spline Traction-Lok assembly with carbon-fiber clutches, high-torque pinion bearing and axle shafts. Ford Performance explicitly cataloged M-4001-A373 for 2005-2010 Mustang GT and Mustang SVT and identified it as the 2008 Bullitt assembly. This product-level fitment does not establish that an unidentified Bullitt, Shelby or marketplace donor is interchangeable without VIN, tag, housing, flange, ABS and included-component verification. Housing-only catalog branches are Base/V6 6R3Z-4010-A -> 7R3Z-4010-A and GT/SVT 6R3Z-4010-B or 7R3Z-4010-C -> AR3Z-4010-C. Historical M-4006-S197 is a factory-style housing/axle build kit, not a complete geared and braked axle. Current Zumbrota reman housing/differential branches are RAA435-2244ARAA435-2244A-P for 3.31 open/Posi, RAA435-2244BRAA435-2244B-P for 3.55 open/Posi, and RAA435-2244DRAA435-2244D-P for 3.73 open/Posi. Non-P A/B/D variants are open aftermarket configurations and are not like-for-like factory standard-GT Traction-Lok replacementsthe -P variants are the Posi configurations. These reman branches are ABS applications but expressly omit hubs, brakes, backing plates and axle shafts.Supersession
Checked housing-only chains are 6R3Z-4010-A -> 7R3Z-4010-A for the separate Base/V6 branch and 6R3Z-4010-B or 7R3Z-4010-C -> AR3Z-4010-C for the checked GT/SVT catalog branch. These 4010 numbers identify housings, not complete axle assemblies. M-4001-A355, M-4001-A373 and M-4006-S197 are separate historical Ford Performance products, not a supersession chain. RAA435-2244A/A-P, B/B-P and D/D-P are parallel ratio and open/Posi reman choices, not revisions or universal replacements.
Fitment
Confirm a standard factory 2005-2010 Mustang GT 4.6L and its factory Traction-Lok/limited-slip requirement, then read the donor VIN, metal axle tag and vehicle axle information before ordering. Engine, transmission or model year alone does not identify the installed 3.31, 3.55 or 3.73 ratio, standard or special-duty housing, limited-slip carrier, pinion flange or included equipment. An open reman axle is not a like-for-like standard-GT replacement; selecting one is a deliberate functional downgrade/change that must be understood before purchase. Never infer that a complete-looking donor includes usable brakes, ABS sensors, shafts, cables, hardware or fluid.
Aftermarket options
Moser M88 is a configurable new performance 8.8 family, not a Ford factory donor or fixed single configuration. The checked page permits a bare housing or a 2005-2014 Mustang bracketed package and separately selects axle retention, spline count, differential, ratio, 2005-2014 companion flange, ABS, brakes and other hardware. The standard built-to-order package includes a configured housing, loose axles, differential, ring and pinion, yoke, cover, bearings, seals and hardware; axles are not installed and optional brakes ship in kit form. Moser labels the category Complete Rears (Some Assembly Required). Zumbrota RAA435-2244 reman branches are another non-factory path and expressly exclude hubs, brakes, backing plates and axle shafts despite complete-axle wording. Their non-P variants are open aftermarket configurations; choosing one instead of the standard GT's factory Traction-Lok is a deliberate functional downgrade/change, not a like-for-like replacement.
Before you buy
This guide is limited to a standard US/LHD 2005-2010 Mustang GT 4.6L with its factory 8.8-inch Traction-Lok/limited-slip solid axle. V6/base 7.5, GT500/KR, Bullitt and other special editions remain separate. Ford Performance cataloged M-4001-A373 for 2005-2010 GT/SVT and identified it as the 2008 Bullitt assembly, but that product-level fitment does not prove an unidentified special-edition or marketplace donor. Match donor VIN, axle tag/code, 8.8 size, exact ratio, differential, ABS, flange, brackets and written included contents; do not infer fitment from engine, transmission, year or seller title alone. Ford 4010 numbers are housing-only. Zumbrota complete-axle listings omit hubs, brakes, backing plates and axle shafts, and their open non-P variants are a deliberate functional downgrade/change rather than a like-for-like standard-GT replacement. A configured Moser M88 is new aftermarket equipment, offers a bare-housing path, ships axles uninstalled and treats brakes as optional kit contents. Inspect used tubes, brackets, welds, corrosion, shafts, bearings, backlash, flange, leaks, crash history, mileage and warranty. Support the vehicle and axle safely, handle brake and ABS work correctly, and do not disturb pinion preload casually. LTL freight, core, lift-gate and return costs matter.
