NA/NB Miata Steering Columns and Intermediate Shafts: Generation, Branch and Safety Identification

US/LHD Mazda MX-5 Miata factory steering-column and intermediate-shaft applications only: 1990-1997 NA upper columns and manual- versus power-steering intermediate shafts; 1999-2005 NB upper column NC10-32-100D; and the independently proved 1999-2004 NB intermediate-shaft branches. For a 2005 NB intermediate shaft, do not assign an identity from this guide: require the recipient VIN/build and a current Mazda catalog result. Resolve both recipient and donor VIN/build, generation, production, steering type where cataloged, manual versus automatic transmission where cataloged, lawful steering-lock/immobilizer equipment, cruise/combination-switch and restraint-adjacent contents, upper/lower splines, joints, brackets and collapsible condition. Exclude the US 1998 gap, 2006-up NC/ND, non-US/RHD and no-airbag assumptions, NA/NB interchange, theft/immobilizer or restraint bypass, race/quick-release columns, altered or welded shafts and impact-collapsed or deployment donors.

What you need to know

Begin with both VINs/build dates and the exact component being purchased: upper collapsible column, intermediate shaft or separate lower joint. For NA, distinguish the 1990-1993 original upper identity from the checked NA75 service column, then select the intermediate shaft by manual versus power steering and the lock assembly by model year and transmission. For NB, the upper column is NC10-32-100D, but the lower shaft changes from manual versus power steering in 1999-2000 to manual versus automatic transmission in 2001-2003; the checked 2004 branch is NC10-32-090D, and this guide intentionally assigns no 2005 shaft number. Compare actual upper and lower splines, shaft length/collapse witness, universal joints, pinch-bolt lands, boots/grommets, brackets and mounting holes. Itemize steering wheel, driver airbag, clockspring/contact equipment, combination switches, cruise wiring, ignition/lock housing, immobilizer coil where equipped, keys, shrouds, harnesses, upper column, intermediate shaft, lower joint, covers and hardware; complete is not an inventory. Do not create a tilt/fixed branch from salvage metadata. Reject any front-impact or driver-airbag-deployment donor, shortened or collapsed section, bent bracket, cracked tube or weld, joint binding/play, damaged splines or pinch-bolt lands, corrosion, water/fire exposure, cut wiring, lock tampering or cut/welded/race modification. Preserve MIA-0020 electrical ignition-switch/no-crank ownership, MIA-0026 tie-rod ownership, MIA-0028 rack/pump/hose ownership and MIA-0058 subframe/rack-mount ownership. Use current Mazda restraint and steering procedures and qualified installation; this guide provides no theft, immobilizer, steering-lock, interlock or SRS bypass instructions.

OEM numbers

NA UPPER COLUMN/ENERGY ABSORBER: original NA01-32-100B for the checked 1990-1993 US airbag branchthe current checked service listing NA75-32-100A replaces NA01-32-100A, NA01-32-100B and NA75-32-100 and covers the checked 1990-1997 seller catalog. NA INTERMEDIATE SHAFT: 1990-1993 manual steering NA01-32-090B and power steering NA02-32-090Bchecked later catalogs show NA01-32-090C -> NA01-32-090D for manual steering and NA02-32-090C -> NA02-32-090D for power steering. NA LOWER JOINT: NA01-32-850 for 1990-1993 and NA01-32-850B for 1994-1997. SEPARATE NA LOCK/CONTROL CONTENTS: manual-transmission lock assemblies NA01-76-290F for 1990-1994 and NA75-76-290C for 1995-1997automatic-transmission N022-76-290C for 1990-1994 and NA81-76-290C for 1995-1997combination switches NB18-66-120A with cruise and NB17-66-120A without cruise. NB UPPER COLUMN: NC10-32-100D for the checked 1999-2005 application. NB INTERMEDIATE SHAFT: 1999-2000 manual steering NC11-32-090D versus power steering NC10-32-090D2001-2003 manual transmission NC11-32-090D versus automatic transmission NC10-32-090D2004 NC10-32-090D. No 2005 intermediate-shaft identity is assigned. NB LOWER JOINT: NC10-32-850. SEPARATE NB CONTROL/LOCK CONTENTS: NC11-66-120A with cruise versus NC10-66-120A without cruiserepresentative 1999-2003 transmission/immobilizer lock branches include NCY0-76-290, NCY3-76-290, NCY3-76-29X and NCY6-76-29X. These separate lock and switch identities prove that a loaded column is not universal or completely inventoried by the core-column number.

Supersession

The checked current NA upper-column listing expressly replaces NA01-32-100A, NA01-32-100B and NA75-32-100 with NA75-32-100A. The checked late-NA catalog expressly shows NA01-32-090C -> NA01-32-090D for manual steering and NA02-32-090C -> NA02-32-090D for power steering. Earlier NA01-32-090B/NA02-32-090B and lower-joint NA01-32-850/NA01-32-850B are treated as dated catalog branches, not an invented interchange chain. NB NC10-32-100D remains the checked upper-column service identity; NC11-32-090D and NC10-32-090D are application branches, not mutual supersessions. No NA-to-NB, manual-to-power-steering, manual-to-automatic, lock/immobilizer, cruise-switch, airbag or 2005-shaft interchange is asserted.

Fitment

Aftermarket options

The checked sourcing paths support remaining new genuine service columns, separate genuine joints and used factory columns/shafts. No universal aftermarket street column, welded shaft or race/quick-release assembly is treated as an OEM supersession. A used factory assembly is acceptable only with exact identity/application, actual-piece photographs, written contents, straight brackets and tube, correct collapse length, smooth bearings/joints, intact splines and pinch lands, uncut wiring and documented no-impact/no-deployment history. A repair-and-return service would require documented structural acceptance, lawful restraint/security handling and a warranty; none is represented here as a checked seller path.

Before you buy

US/LHD factory columns and shafts only. Match both VINs/builds, generation, exact identity, NA manual/power steering branch, NB shaft transmission/steering branch, splines/joints, mounting and written lock/switch/restraint contents. NC10-32-100D is supported for the 1999-2005 NB upper column, but this guide assigns no 2005 intermediate-shaft number. Do not infer NA/NB interchange or a tilt branch. Reject impact/deployment, collapse, binding/play, spline or pinch damage, corrosion, tampering, cut wiring or welded/race parts; use qualified steering/SRS service. Seller states are dated.
