2003-2008 350Z Complete RE5R05A Automatic Transmission Assembly Identification

US/LHD 2003-2008 Nissan 350Z factory five-speed automatic applications only: 2003-2006 VQ35DE and 2007-2008 VQ35HR, with Coupe versus Roadster, production date and installed assembly identity resolved separately. This guide covers complete RE5R05A transmission sourcing, not internal valve-body interchange. Exclude manual cars and conversions, 2009 Roadster, G35/FX/370Z, non-US/RHD or JDM plug-and-play assumptions, and any donor whose tag, body, engine era or included electronics cannot be documented.

What you need to know

Start with the recipient VIN, production month, US Coupe/Roadster body, VQ35DE/VQ35HR era and the installed assembly label or stamped identity; require the same information from the donor. Itemize whether the sale includes the torque converter, control valve and TCM, internal/external harness and connectors, sensors, cooler fittings or lines, dipstick/fill and breather pieces, crossmember/mount, output flange or yoke, fluid and hardware. A seller's words complete transmission do not prove those items are present or compatible. Nissan bulletin NTB14-033a says a replacement automatic transmission or control valve can contain a blank TCM that must be programmed and then configured using the vehicle VIN/catalog; programming is not optional simply because the case fits. Compare cooler-tube catalog breaks around 08/2005 and 11/2006 rather than forcing fittings. For a used unit require tag photos, donor VIN/build/body/engine, mileage basis, road/dyno test evidence if available, pan/fluid condition, leaks, broken connectors or case damage, torque-converter retention, warranty/startup terms, core terms and freight damage procedure. Diagnose engine controls, power/grounds, harness/connectors, TCM/DTCs, shift linkage, driveshaft/differential, fluid level/condition and the separate valve-body/TCM failure path before condemning the complete unit. This is heavy powertrain work: use qualified lifting/support equipment and the exact service procedure, fully seat the converter to protect the pump, clean/verify the cooling circuit, keep debris out, and use the current Nissan-specified fluid and fill/level procedure for the exact application. Do not rely on a generic fill quantity or substitute fluid claim. Flatbed or rear-wheels-off-ground towing guidance applies when the car cannot be safely driven.

The checked Nissan catalogs show production- and body-dependent complete-assembly identities, including early 31020-91X05, 31020-91X22 and 31020-92X0631020-CE802 on a checked early Roadster branch31020-CF002 and 31020-CF00Aand later 31020-CF40A31020-CF40B with service replacement 31020-CF40C. On the checked VQ35HR branches, 31020-EV00E is the earlier Coupe assembly identity and is replaced by service assembly 310C0-EV00Ethe checked Roadster service identity is 310C0-EV20A. Checked blank/new assemblies branch from 31020-92X2B to later 310C0-3EX7A, with 310C0-3EX7A replaced by 310C0-62X2A. Nissan's diagram lookup code remains 31020 even when the actual current service part number begins 310C0do not copy the lookup code into the part number. These are catalog search and verification identities, not a universal interchange list. Resolve the VIN, production date, Coupe/Roadster, VQ35DE/VQ35HR, readable case/tag identity, control-valve/TCM state, connectors, cooler fittings and output interface before ordering.

Supersession

Only the explicit checked catalog relationships are retained: 31020-CF40C is listed as replacing 31020-CF40A and 31020-CF40B; earlier VQ35HR Coupe assembly 31020-EV00E is replaced by 310C0-EV00E, whose exact seller record also lists 31020-EV00A, 31020-EV00B and 31020-EV00D among the replaced identities; and blank/new 310C0-3EX7A is replaced by 310C0-62X2A. The checked Roadster service identity is separately 310C0-EV20A. No arrow is asserted among the earlier 91X, 92X, CE, CF, Coupe, Roadster, VQ35DE and VQ35HR branches beyond those explicit catalog relationships. RE5R05A is a transmission family name, not proof that a G35, FX, JDM or later Nissan unit is plug-and-play. A complete assembly also does not erase the replacement TCM programming/configuration requirement documented by Nissan.

Aftermarket options

No generic cross-platform replacement is promoted. A checked AutoZone path identifies a National Powertrain remanufactured RE5R05A assembly, but remanufacturer family labeling still requires exact vehicle application, body/engine era, included torque converter and electronics, programming responsibility, core and warranty confirmation. Used/JDM sellers can be sourcing leads only when the exact case/tag, connectors and included components are photographed; one checked JDM seller explicitly warns that US sensors, harness, solenoids or external components may need transfer. That warning is not proof that every import unit can be converted. A local specialist rebuild of the known original unit may preserve its application identity, but obtain a written hard-parts, converter, valve-body/TCM, cooler-cleaning, programming, labor, core and warranty scope before comparing it with a used complete assembly.

Before you buy

US 2003-2008 factory-automatic 350Z only. Match VIN/build date, Coupe/Roadster, VQ35DE/VQ35HR, readable assembly identity, connectors, cooler fittings and output interface. RE5R05A family labeling is not cross-platform interchange proof. Require an itemized converter, valve-body/TCM, harness, sensor, fitting and hardware scope. Nissan documents that replacement units can contain a blank TCM requiring programming and configuration.
